As an international business center, Guangzhou is very competitive in business convention and exhibition industry, and it is moving ahead from a “thousand-year business center” towards a “modern business center”. In 2015, the total volume of retail sales of consumer goods was RMB 793.3 billion yuan, an increase of 11%. Guangzhou has ranked the third in terms of the size of commercial circulation for 28 consecutive years, higher than a quarter of the province’s total. In the same year, its total sales of wholesale and retailing market reached RMB 5,0902 yuan, an increase of 10.2%, accounting for near 50% of the province’s total. The turnover of online stores’ retail sales were RMB 51.621 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 62.1%, with a contribution rate of 71.4% to the retail trade above designated size, stimulating a growth of 6.9 percentage points inretail trade above designated size. Guangzhou has been approved by the StateCouncil to become a pilot city for the integrated development of domestic trade and distribution system, as well as for the innovation and development of service trade. Guangzhou is home to a large number of commodity trading markets, with the turnover of nearly RMB 1 trillion yuan, accounting for one-fifth of Guangzhou’s total sales. There are 889 professional wholesalemarkets in the city, covering an area of about 19 square kilometers and an operating area of about 10 square kilometers. 158 of them have the turnover ofover RMB 100 million yuan, and 10 of them over RMB 10 billion yuan.
China Import and Export Commodities Fair (Canton fair) which is held twice a year in Guangzhou, has been hosted for 118 sessions so far. It is China’s largest exhibition. In 2015, 482 exhibitions were held in Guangzhou’s 20 key venues, a year-on-year increase of 23%, with the exhibition area of 8.62 million square meters, a slight rise compared with the previous year.
(ii) Commercial Function Zone (Shopping Area)
Tianhe Road Shopping Area: It is centered around Tianhe Road, and has become the largest shopping area in South China. It is known as the Brand Area and Core Area of Guangzhou International Trade Center, with a total coverage of about 4.5 square kilometers,of which total commercial area reaching 1.4 million square meters. It brings together Grandview Plaza, Taikoo Hui, Tinho Town, One Link Walk and other largeshopping centers. With the gathering of nearly 300 international brands, it strives to build itself into an internationally renowned shopping area.
Beijing Road ShoppingArea: Blessed with historical and cultural atmosphere, developed commerce and numerous historical and cultural attractions, it has been the political, cultural and business center of Guangzhou since ancient time. It is a “name card” for Guangzhou and even the South China, and it is a must-see for tourists at home and abroad to go shopping. Shangxiajiu Shopping Area: With ahundred-year history, Shangxiajiu Walking Street is the No.1 commercial pedestrian street in Guangzhou City. 800 meters long, the mall is home to 238 buildings of arcade features. There is a collection of distinctive departmentstores, famous domestic and foreign restaurants and authentic traditional Cantonese cuisine, and all of them are full of Lingnan features.
Other Shopping Areas: Zhujiang New Town shoppingarea, Baiyun New Town shopping area, Weber-Chimelong-Hanxi shopping area and other emerging urban commercial zones (shopping areas) are growing to be more functional.
Pazhou International Convention and Exhibition Center: It is located in Pazhou Island, HaizhuDistrict, it has a world-class exhibition resources, gathering exhibition hallfor Canton Fair, Poly World Trade Center Exhibition Hall, Zhongzhou International Commercial Exhibition Center, and Nan Fung InternationalConvention and Exhibition Center, etc. All the pavilions cover a total area of 539,000 square meters for exhibitions. Poly World Trade Center Exhibition Halland Zhongzhou International Commercial Exhibition Center are the designated exhibition halls by The Global Association of the Exhibition Industry (UFI). Currently, Pazhou District is home to three five-star hotels, includingShangri-La Hotel, Canton Fair Westin Hotels & Resorts, and Langham Place,which can provide altogether 1529rooms and nearly 15,000 square meters ofmeeting space. In addition, there are a number of high-end office buildings,such as Poly International Plaza, Poly World Trade Center Exhibition Hall, aswell as Nan Fung International Convention and Exhibition Center. Pazhou International Convention and Exhibition Center has been designated as the province’s very first batch of demonstration bases for service and trade liberalization among Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao. And it has become the first national model district of famous brands in convention and exhibition industry with the approval of General Administration of Quality Supervision.
(iii) Investment PromotionPriority
Efforts will be made to mainly attract international trade enterprises, sales headquarters, procurement centers, and settlement centers to settle, as well as to invite high-end brand chain enterprises and experience-type commerce. International procurement platform (center), e-commerce platform, modern trade agglomeration district and commercial blocks will be developed, so as to transform traditional commodity trading market with the application of modern trading manners. Besides,vigorous endeavors will be made to develop large-scale integrated exhibition,professional exhibition trade and the related services.
Priorities will be given to attracting the world’s top 20 enterprises in convention an exhibition industry and famous companies from Hong Kong to set regional headquarters and offices inGuangzhou. The contact and cooperation with Hong Kong and Macao enterprises inconvention and exhibition industry are hoped to be strengthened through holding cooperation forums, inviting them to hold exhibitions in Guangzhou and joint international promotion.
The introduction of high level forums and conferences at home and abroad will beemphasized, in order to gradually build Guangzhou into a world famous city thatis able to undertake international conferences. The joint development of theexhibition and conference businesses will be pushed forward in a way that extends the industry chain. Supports will be given to cooperation between MICE enterprises and internationally renowned e-commerce service providers for the development of electronic exhibition in new formats. Enterprises of e-commercewill be encouraged to build e-commerce platforms for international conferenceand exhibition, promoting the development of e-commerce integration withexhibition industry.
